MUSIC SOFTWARE

Music Software

This site was originally intended not only to help students with the Music Technology and studio courses, but also how to integrate what they learn about the sequencing and notation software into their other work. This includes using Emagic Logic's scorewriting features and is aimed especially at those students who find music technology frightening or difficult. The site will be updated frequently (the templates section is not yet complete) and I welcome any comments about the site. Please let me know how it can be improved, whether there are broken links, something you don't understand, mistakes or useful score templates to add. I welcome additions to the "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQ) and "Tips" on the support pages.

This site is not connected with Southampton University. I have drawn on my experience teaching at Southampton, however these pages are designed to help music technology students and staff everywhere.

Emagic Logic

The software taught at Southampton University Music is Emagic Logic Gold on the Music Technology course in the computing cluster and Emagic Logic Platinum in the Music studios. This software replaced Cakewalk and Finale in 1998 when it was decided that it made more sense to use one all round application that included both MIDI and notation functions. Since then Emagic Logic has been developed into what the professional recording industry has recognised to be the best all round music processing software. Students no longer need to start composing their music in one application and then need the complication of importing it into another for scorewriting. The introduction of powerful and reliable audio recording functions into Logic has also meant that prohibitively expensive dedicated audio systems such as Digidesign Protools are no longer necessary for recording, and excellent hard disk recording software such as Logic is now within the range of many students' budget. More information on the integration of Logic into the syllabus and comparison with other software is discussed in greater detail on othe pages of this site. Any student who is keen on moving on the the studio course or commercial composition course is encouraged to buy their own software, details are available on the discounts page

Transcribe

This very useful transcription software is available in the cluster. You can load an mp3 or wav file and slow it down. It has a virtual keyboard to help you work out the pitches of notes. You can also put in bar markers to help with notation and select regions to cycle round
