The reasons for choosing Emagic Logic for the Music Department at Southampton University are documented in this article on notation and score writing software. Please direct any questions to Pete Thomas Emagic and AppleAs some of you may know The Apple Corporation has recently acquired Emagic. This is a very exciting and positive move for Emagic as Apple have shown an enormous commitment to developing the software into an even more creative music tool. Logic on Windows is no longer developed or supported. Integration into the undergraduate syllabusSome of the MIDI sequencing and scorewriting aspects of Logic have been taught on the first year Music Technology course at Southampton. The best students (currently those with the top ten highest marks) on this course would normally go on to take the second and third year studio courses which introduce the audio recording functions of Logic in a studio environment. As the first year course is primarily a foundation course it does not cover any aspect of Logic in great detail. The Music Department has been looking at ways of encouraging students to develop the music processing skills they learn on this course and use them to aid their work in other courses, especially those courses in which students may be required to submit scores such as ATC, O&A, Jazz Techniques and Composition. The scorewriting functions of Logic have also been useful to any coursework that may require musical examples, as it is very easy to capture a snapshot of all or part of a score in Logic and import it directly as an image into Word or Excel. On other pages of this site you will find useful information regarding educational discounts on the purchase of software and hardware as well as some score templates already set up for various ensembles and step by step instructions on how to use them. We believe that this technology should be used creatively rather than having to battle with it, and we will be very greatful to receive any feedback from students and staff, whether it be suggestions for more templates, ideas on how Logic can be further integrated into a syllabus or helpful criticism of the site in general. |
