The hardest part of this was mixing the drums. My brief was to use a very brash and showy tom tom based drum track so I combined a few really hard swing tom loops that I have collected. I then felt it also needed a real drum performace with cymblas, not just for the feel overall feel and to add some accents, but also to impart a little more top end flavour to the sound. It was very easy for one or the other to dominate or become obscured. Compression didn't work too well on the tom toms as they seemed to lose a lot of excitement, but a Sonalksis plugin did the trick on the live kit. With this kind of swing rhythm I usually use a guitar playing a Freddie Green style "4-to-a-bar" rhythm part that is not very audible, but you miss it if it isn’t there
